X-Men Step Into the Endgame as Avengers: Doomsday Teaser Brings Legacy Mutants Into the MCU

The X-Men have officially entered Marvel’s endgame.

Marvel Studios has unveiled a new teaser for Avengers: Doomsday spotlighting the long-awaited return of Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, and James Marsden’s Cyclops—marking the first time these legacy characters appear under the Marvel Cinematic Universe banner.

The teaser arrives after a brief period of online circulation and follows two earlier previews centered on Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. Together, the rollout signals Doomsday as a multiversal convergence point rather than a traditional Avengers sequel.

A Familiar World, Fractured

The footage opens at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters—once a sanctuary for mutants—now left in visible ruin. The setting immediately establishes a darker tonal register, framing the return of these characters not as nostalgic victory laps but as participants in a collapsing reality.

One of the teaser’s most striking moments revisits the iconic chess match between Xavier and Magneto, a visual shorthand for their ideological rivalry that dates back to the earliest X-Men films. This quiet familiarity is quickly undercut by a far more violent image: Cyclops tearing off his visor and unleashing an uncontrolled optic blast, signaling a leader pushed past restraint.

Magneto’s voiceover underscores the shift.
“Death comes for us all. It’s all I know for sure,” he says. “The question isn’t, ‘Are you prepared to die?’ The question is, ‘Who will you be when you close your eyes?’”

Aesthetic Reset With Comic Roots

The teaser also confirms a deliberate visual recalibration for the mutant characters. Cyclops appears in a blue-and-yellow uniform that leans closer to classic comic iconography, while Xavier wears a muted jacket bearing a black-and-red X insignia. The design language recalls the early-2000s New X-Men era by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, suggesting Marvel’s intent to bridge legacy casting with a refreshed tonal identity.

While the teaser focuses on its central trio, several other returning X-Men actors are confirmed for roles in Avengers: Doomsday, including Channing Tatum as Gambit, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.

A Long-Delayed Integration

The reintroduction of the X-Men has been years in the making, tracing back to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. Since then, Marvel has cautiously seeded mutant appearances across the MCU—Grammer’s Beast in The Marvels, Stewart’s Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and a broader mutant presence in Deadpool and Wolverine—while holding back a full-scale reintegration.

Avengers: Doomsday appears to be the moment where restraint gives way to consolidation.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film reportedly brings together characters from across fractured realities, with Robert Downey Jr. portraying Victor Von Doom—positioned as the central destabilizing force of the multiverse. The story will continue directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, which Marvel has framed as both a narrative climax and a structural reset.

That reset is expected to include a gradual recasting of X-Men roles, making Doomsday and Secret Wars a transitional chapter—one that honors the Fox-era legacy while clearing the runway for a new generation of mutants.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
