Across the Atlantic: Why So Many Hollywood Stars Are Hanging Up Their California Keys and Setting Roots in Europe

A subtle but unmistakable shift is happening in show business: a growing number of American entertainers are trading Los Angeles zip codes for addresses abroad. From the rolling hills of the English countryside to the seaside vineyards of southern France and the cozy streets of Dublin, some of Hollywood’s most recognizable names are redefining what it means to be a global celebrity in the 2020s.

This isn’t a celebrity rumor or fleeting headline. It’s a pattern, one that has every bit as much to do with lifestyle and legacy as it does with fame itself.

A Familiar Migration, But on a New Scale

Stars fleeing the relentless glare of Tinseltown isn’t a novel concept — plenty of actors split their time between coasts or continents during shoots and festival seasons. What is new is the permanence with which many now view life beyond U.S. borders.

Take George and Amal Clooney, for example. After years of juggling properties in New York, Italy and the U.S., the couple took the decisive step of becoming French citizens and planting deeper roots in rural France — largely, George has said, to give their children a life far from paparazzi flashes and Hollywood hyperbole.

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell followed her own compass to Ireland, openly citing political unease and personal safety as catalysts for her move. Meanwhile, beloved TV host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi packed up their Montecito compound and established a new life in the Cotswolds.

And then there are celebs who have largely kept their destinations private but confirmed that the U.S. is no longer their primary base at all — a telling sign of how wide this trend’s ripple has become.

What’s Driving the Exodus? It’s Not One Simple Thing

There’s no single “silver bullet” explanation for why so many stars are relocating. What we’re seeing instead is an intersection of personal, cultural and, yes, political forces.

Lifestyle and privacy: Many veterans of the spotlight speak candidly about burnout. Being recognized everywhere you go can erode the simple pleasures of anonymity — something European life still affords more readily than a crowded café in Hollywood. For families, that contrast is especially stark.

Creative opportunity and global outlook: The film and television ecosystem is no longer anchored exclusively to Southern California. International productions, streaming platforms and cross‑continental collaborations mean that artists can pursue meaningful work anywhere. For some, that opens the door to living where they feel most inspired.

Political and social climate: A number of celebrities have explicitly tied their moves to changes in the U.S. political environment — using phrases like feeling unsafe or disillusioned with the national discourse. While not everyone who moves abroad does so for this reason, it has undeniably become part of the conversation around these decisions.

Not Just a Phase — But a New Normal?

What makes this moment compelling isn’t just how many stars have moved, but how openly they talk about why they made that choice. A global lifestyle used to be the preserve of wealthy entrepreneurs and international diplomats. Now, it’s becoming an artistic lifestyle choice — a reminder that fame no longer dictates a single address.

Whether this marks a long‑term reshaping of Hollywood’s cultural gravity remains to be seen. But increasingly, the image of a star perched on a Paris terrace or raising a family in a windswept English village feels less like tabloid fantasy and more like a sensible, intentional life decision.

In 2026, the idea of “home” for the Hollywood elite is bigger than one city — and it’s taking shape across borders and time zones.
