The Lord of the Rings trilogy has officially returned to U.S. theaters this weekend, as Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures launch a limited 25th anniversary re-release of the extended editions — backed by strong advance ticket sales that have already crossed the $5 million mark.
According to Fathom Entertainment, the re-release is unfolding across two consecutive weekends, Jan. 16–18 and Jan. 23–25, with participating cinemas screening the extended cuts as special-event presentations. Select locations are offering premium formats, including D-BOX motion seating, alongside anniversary-themed concession items tied to the engagement.
The theatrical return arrives with notable commercial momentum. As reported by Variety, U.S. presales for the trilogy surpassed $5 million prior to opening weekend, representing approximately 407,000 tickets sold ahead of the first screenings. The figure places the reissue among the stronger advance performers for catalog titles in recent years, particularly for multi-day engagements rather than single-night revival events.
The timing of the release coincides with renewed studio focus on Middle-earth. Warner Bros. is currently developing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, slated for theatrical release in December 2027, positioning the anniversary screenings as both a retrospective moment and part of a broader franchise continuum.
Unlike traditional re-releases limited to one-off screenings, the current engagement allows audiences to experience the trilogy in sequence over multiple days, emphasizing theatrical endurance rather than novelty. Early attendance patterns suggest that the films continue to function as communal cinema events, drawing both long-time fans and first-time theatrical viewers.
As the first weekend screenings conclude and the second weekend approaches, The Lord of the Rings trilogy’s return underscores the sustained exhibition value of legacy franchises — not as relics of the past, but as active components of the contemporary theatrical landscape.
