Netflix’s ‘The Abandons’: A Gritty Western That Struggles to Reach Its Potential

In the crowded landscape of prestige TV, few names carry as much weight as Kurt Sutter. The creator of Sons of Anarchy returns with The Abandons, a Western set in 1854 Washington Territory, starring Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey. The premise is promising: two formidable women at the center of a land dispute, navigating a harsh frontier with moral complexity. But despite the talent involved, the series often feels uneven and underdeveloped.

A Tale of Two Matriarchs

Headey plays Fiona Nolan, an Irish matriarch leading a chosen family on a silver-rich ranch, while Anderson’s Constance Van Ness is a wealthy, ruthless mining mogul intent on seizing control of the land. Their dynamic is the heart of the show, and both actors deliver strong performances in their key confrontations. Headey brings warmth and steely determination, while Anderson’s icy, calculated presence creates tension whenever the two are onscreen together.

Yet the supporting cast struggles to leave an impression. Characters like Dahlia, Elias, Albert, and Lilla Belle receive uneven development, and plot threads connecting them often feel thin or incomplete. Some relationships, like the budding romance between Elias and Constance’s daughter Trisha, fall flat, while other storylines, including interactions with the local Cayuse tribe, lack depth. The show’s ensemble simply cannot match the energy and clarity of its two lead antiheroines.

Pacing and Structure

One of the series’ most noticeable flaws is its pacing. Episodes run closer to 30–40 minutes rather than the standard hour, which creates a compressed feeling. The story jumps between plotlines too quickly, leaving key conflicts underexplored. The finale, while dramatic, ends abruptly and leaves too many narrative questions unanswered. The Abandons seems to struggle with balancing ambition and focus—there’s a lot to tell, but not enough time or space to tell it convincingly.

Style and Atmosphere

Visually, the show leans into traditional Western aesthetics: rugged landscapes, period-accurate costumes, and practical sets that give the series a tangible weight. The 70mm-equivalent cinematography and attention to detail in leather, wool, and dyes are impressive and show Sutter’s commitment to creating a tactile, authentic world. The show has a cinematic feel, and at times, the tension in the frontier sequences is palpable.

However, the dialogue and tone often undercut the atmosphere. Lines meant to evoke 19th-century frontier speech sometimes feel forced or anachronistic. At moments, characters speak in stylized, overly dramatic sentences that take viewers out of the story rather than immersing them. The attempt at Deadwood-style poetry in the dialogue does not always land.

Themes and Ambition

Sutter’s attempt to center women in a genre traditionally dominated by male narratives is commendable. The series explores power, family, and survival in a frontier society, and it hints at socio-political commentary about class, land rights, and racial tension. Unfortunately, these ambitions are not consistently realized. Subplots about marginalized groups or secondary characters feel rushed or overlooked, which prevents the series from fully engaging with the richness of its premise.

Verdict

The Abandons has moments of promise—strong leads, a compelling premise, and visually impressive production design—but its uneven pacing, underdeveloped supporting characters, and abrupt storytelling keep it from reaching the potential of women-led Westerns like Godless. Ambitious in scope but inconsistent in execution, it’s a series that may intrigue some viewers but will likely leave others wishing for a more fully realized frontier tale.
